A chronicle is an artistic or professional piece of information that contains descriptions of the features found in an area and how to travel through it using landmarks.
A creature that can understand and is in possession of an accurate chronicle can't become lost when it takes the Journey activity through the area featured in the chronicle. An inaccurate chronicle grants disadvantage on any ability check made as part of the Journey activity.
When you add a landmark to a chronicle, you can make it hidden or false. A hidden landmark can be revealed with an Intelligence (Investigation) check, and a false landmark can be discerned with a Wisdom (Insight) check, both of which use your choice of your Intelligence or Wisdom DC.
When you take the Survey activity and create a landmark, you can expend a level 1 spell slot to imbue the material you provide (such as the clay, cloth, or ink) with the task to become magical for the duration of the activity. Once you create the chronicle, you can cause the hidden landmark to either only be revealed under a specific circumstance or through special instructions, such as being under moonlight of a distinct date, through command words in an exotic or rare cant, or by providing a special key, or for the false landmark to become either indiscernible from a real landmark or to change into a different false landmark whenever the chronicle is used.
